The Master of Crisis and Disaster Management course is aimed at increasing the theoretical and practically-oriented knowledge and skills of crisis managers. The course is open to participants from various backgrounds such as people responsible for, or otherwise involved in disaster management and/or crisis management at the national, provincial, regional or local government levels or in trade and industry. This way the course is a meeting place for the various disciplines in disaster and crisis management and therefore contributes greatly to total safety.
The MCDM course is a joint project of the Netherlands Institute for Fire and Disaster Management (Nibra) and the Netherlands School of Government (NSOB).
The course is open to managers and executives who are responsible for aspects associated with disaster and/or crisis management, for instance, officials in the local, provincial or national government or in the partner organizations in disaster management (police, Area Health Authority, fire service). Managers in comparable positions in the private sector or with international organizations can also be admitted to the course.
All the participants are expected to have obtained higher vocational education or university degrees.
The programme includes two periods of practical training. The first period is aimed at introducing the participants to the way in which non-operational services prepare themselves for crisis situations.
The objective of the second period of practical training is to enable the participants to gain an insight into the way a foreign government works, its civil service and the services and organizations that are responsible for crisis and disaster management. The aim is to arrange for the assignments and training periods to take place in countries that have seen a different political and cultural development and history. Being open to new ideas and recognizing the differences and similarities between methods of working should stimulate professional and personal development in order to be able to act in unfamiliar and uncertain situations in an analyzing and purposeful way.
